May 2026 Food Beverage Reporter Magazine

With the South African food and beverage industry nearing the halfway mark of 2026, the year has already delivered significant challenges. Geopolitical instability, economic volatility, supply chain pressure and severe local weather events — including recent floods and destructive fires in parts of the Eastern and Western Cape — have once again tested the resilience of manufacturers, processors and packaging companies across the value chain.

Yet despite the uncertainty, the industry continues to push forward. Across the sector, businesses are investing in expansion projects, celebrating milestones and anniversaries, introducing new technologies and adapting operations to remain competitive in a demanding environment. That resilience remains one of the defining strengths of South Africa’s food, beverage and packaging industries.

This edition of Food & Beverage Reporter reflects many of the issues currently shaping the sector.

One of the most important national conversations centres on child nutrition and stunting. South Africa continues to have one of the highest stunting rates among upper-middle income countries globally, with more than a quarter of children under five affected. As Professor Ronelle Burger explains, stunting impacts not only physical growth, but also cognitive development, educational performance and long-term productivity. Researchers at Stellenbosch University recently released a comprehensive body of evidence and recommendations aimed at improving outcomes for young children.

This issue also examines how functional nutrition is moving into the mainstream. At Vitafoods Europe 2026, the nutraceutical industry showcased the growing convergence of food, supplements and preventative wellness, with innovation focused on immunity, gut health, cognition and healthy ageing.

Elsewhere, we explore the growing importance of precision measurement technologies in improving efficiency, compliance and sustainability in food manufacturing with VEGA, alongside the increasingly connected challenges of allergen control, food fraud and nutritional reformulation. Don’t miss Verder’s insights into how good unloading practices can improve efficiency and product integrity and see how Urschel takes cheese processing to the next level.

Packaging and sustainability innovation also feature strongly in this edition, from advanced automation technologies showcased by KHS to the continued progress being made in South Africa’s recycling economy through initiatives led by PETCO. As manufacturers face mounting pressure to improve efficiency, reduce waste and meet sustainability targets, investment across the packaging value chain is accelerating — reinforcing the industry’s growing commitment to circular economy solutions and resource conservation.

As always, we hope this edition provides valuable insight into the technologies, trends and innovations shaping the future of South Africa’s food and beverage industry.
